There was IA and IAA, then FCS and FBS, now there is P5 and G5
There seems to be a natural process of FBS splitting into two parts without anything official happening. Essentially, the G5 schools are IAA without the official label, and without the chance to play for a championship. Any remote chance of any of them making the playoffs gets exponentially smaller every year. The financial disadvantage is only getting wider, and by a huge measure. People talk of the P5 breaking away at some point and forming their own group. For all practical purposes, I think that has already happened everywhere except on official documents. There are still games played between the two groups, but that happened between FBS and FCS as well. They do share bowl games, which is about the only thing really making it seem like they are in the same group. Maybe they should go ahead and establish a G5 playoff, and crown a champion. Accept their situation and market themselves accordingly. Otherwise, they will continue to decline.
